Kip A. Cates was born in Vancouver, Canada and now lives in Tottori, Japan.
He is an active partner in an international marriage with his Japanese
wife and 10-year old son. He has worked, lived or travelled in 50 countries
around the world and speaks 9 different languages.
Mr. Cates has a B.A. in Modern Languages (French, German, Japanese) from
the University of British Columbia, Canada and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics
from the University of Reading, England. He is currently an instructor
in the Faculty of Regional Sciences and Education at Tottori University
where he teaches English, global studies, human rights and international
exchange. He has previously taught English in Kobe, Japan and at Yarmouk
University, Jordan in the Middle East.
Mr. Cates is active as a teacher, trainer, materials designer and networker
in the new field of global education. He teaches graduate courses in this
area for the "M.A. in TESOL" program of Teachers College Columbia
University at its Tokyo campus. He is the founder and coordinator of the
"Global Issues in Language Education" Special Interest Group
(SIG) of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) and editor
of the quarterly "Global Issues in Language Education Newsletter"
read by 500 language professionals around the world.
Mr. Cates belongs to the group "Educators for Social Responsibility"
and is past chair of "TESOLers for Social Responsibility." He
has worked on international projects with such groups as the Russian organization
Educators for Peace, the Centre for Global Education in England and the
American Forum for Global Education in New York.
In addition to his numerous articles on global issues and language teaching,
Mr. Cates has given presentations on the theory and practice of global
education, peace education, human rights education and environmental education
to language teaching associations throughout Japan, at international conferences
such as TESOL, IATEFL, AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics)
and FIPLV (World Federation of Modern Language Associations) as well as
to language teachers in countries such as Greece, Hungary, Malaysia, Vietnam,
Canada, Egypt and Thailand.
Mr. Cates has given teacher training workshops on global education in Lebanon,
Israel and the USA, has given presentations at international conferences
sponsored by UNESCO and the United Nations, and has organized Linguapax
workshops on "language teaching and peace." Among his current
projects, he is working to promote inter-Asian understanding through English
by organizing Korea-Japan exchange programs and an "Asian Youth Forum"
which brings together young people in Asia to communicate in English about
global issues and international understanding.
